Generator Fuel Storage Rules

A generator without fuel is a heavy paperweight, but fuel stored badly is worse than no fuel at all: gasoline is the most dangerous substance most households ever keep, and it also quietly goes stale on the shelf. The good news is that safe, fresh fuel storage comes down to seven rules, and every one of them has a plain reason behind it. Here they are, in the order a sensible household would apply them.

Rule 1: Know your quantity ceiling before you buy cans

NFPA 30, the fire code standard most local rules derive from, caps residential storage of gasoline-class liquids at 25 gallons, and many local fire codes are stricter than that - a limit of 10 gallons in an attached garage is common. The reason is blunt: gasoline vapor is the hazard, not the liquid, and the more you store the larger the vapor problem you are keeping next to your family. Check your local code before you decide how much to keep. Rule 2: Approved containers only

Store gasoline only in containers designed and approved for it. Proper fuel containers seal against vapor escape, resist the pressure swings of temperature changes, and are built from materials gasoline does not degrade. Improvised containers fail on all three counts, and a container that breathes vapor is both a fire hazard and a freshness leak, since the light, volatile parts of gasoline are exactly what escapes first. Cap them tight, and leave a little headspace for expansion on hot days.

Rule 3: Location - never indoors, never near ignition

Fuel lives in a detached shed or a well-ventilated outbuilding, away from living space, and never near ignition sources. Water heaters, furnaces, freezers that cycle on and off, and anything else with a pilot light, spark, or relay all count as ignition sources. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and travels along the floor, which means the danger radius is bigger than it looks. Rule 4: Stabilize it, and respect the clock

Untreated gasoline starts degrading in as little as three to six months, and octane loss and gum formation can begin within 30 to 60 days. Stale fuel varnishes carburetors, and a gummed carburetor is the classic reason a generator that "worked fine last year" refuses to start in the exact storm it was bought for. Fuel stabilizer, added when the can is filled, extends usable life to roughly one to two years in a sealed, approved container. Write the fill date on every can with a marker. A date you can read beats a memory you have to trust.

Rule 5: Rotate through your car

Even stabilized fuel should not sit forever, and the cheapest rotation system is parked in your driveway. Every few months, pour the oldest can into your car's tank, refill the can with fresh gasoline, stabilize it, and re-date it. The car does not care about slightly aged fuel diluted into a full tank, your stored supply stays perpetually fresh, and the rotation costs you nothing but a few minutes, since you were going to buy that gasoline anyway. This is the same first-in, first-out logic that keeps a food supply honest, applied to a liquid.

Rule 6: Never refuel a hot generator

Shut the generator down and let it cool before refueling, every time, no matter how urgent the outage feels. Gasoline splashed or spilled onto a hot engine and muffler can ignite instantly, and refueling is the moment when spills happen. The discipline costs you a short stretch of downtime; skipping it can cost you the generator, the shed, or worse. Plan refueling into the run schedule - a natural pause to check oil and cool down - rather than treating it as an interruption.

Rule 7: The companion rule - 20 feet, exhaust away

Fuel storage and generator placement are two halves of one safety picture, so the CPSC placement rule belongs on this list even though it is about the machine rather than the can: run a portable generator outdoors only, at least 20 feet from the house, with the exhaust pointed away from your home and any neighboring buildings. A garage with the door open does not count as outdoors, and never has.

The habit that holds it together

None of these rules is difficult; the failure mode is letting them decay. Twice a year, check dates, rotate the oldest can, confirm the containers still seal, and start the generator for a test run.
